General Construction and Repair Mechanic

Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is searching for a General Construction and Repair Mechanic to join their team.

Duties include:

• Perform a variety of maintenance, construction and renovation operations in and around the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) buildings
• Perform various carpentry work for construction of partitions, room divisions, enclosures, fit and hang doors, etc.
• Operate a variety of wood working, sheet metal and welding equipment such as power saws, planers, routers, power planes, brakes, shears and a variety of carpenter’s hand tools
• Perform various masonry work for alterations, improvements, air conditioning equipment installation and specialized equipment relocation or installation
• Mix concrete for machine bed construction and for various building construction operations
• Set, level and align machines and equipment
• Repair, relay or install new floors of concrete, wood blocks, tile, etc.
• Repair or improve roof surfacing, rain gutters, etc.
• Repair and install locks on doors, cabinets, security files, safes, etc., including high-security locks
• Coordinate installations of security monitoring devices with vendors
• Maintain keying system for all ARL facilities; set up cores and keys using ARL pinning index; cut keys to match cores; install cores. Install laboratory equipment such as cabinets, tops, hoods, etc.
• Interpret work orders, drawings, and blueprints; determine materials needed; order and/or purchase materials; plan and lay out work in proper sequence
• Direct the work of student helpers or laborers, as assigned by supervisor
• Drive department vehicle as required
• Perform other duties related or similar to the type described above

Job Requirements: Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, all varieties of adjustable
measuring instruments and the use of broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or equivalent to high school plus a 2-year technical college education. Over 3 years up to and including 5 years of effective experience. U.S. citizenship required.

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Days Off: Saturday, Sunday

Note: This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
